Shimazu Yoshihiro's Encampment (Sekigahara Town)

Location:1869-3 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

Yoshihiro set up camp here with his nephew, Shimazu Toyohisa, in command of an army of 1,500 soldiers. Digging in to defend on the morning of the battle, he even refused Ishida Mitsunari’s request for reinforcements. When the Western Army was routed, he broke through enemy ranks and returned to Satsuma.

Otani Yoshitsugu’s Grave Site (Sekigahara Town)

Location:678-2 Oaza Fujishita, Sekigahara Town

Facing defeat, Otani Yoshitsugu committed seppuku and ordered his retainer, Yuasa Gosuke, to take his head and hide it from the Eastern troops. Straight after hiding his severed head, Gosuke was discovered by the nephew of Todo Takatora. It is said that he implored his captor to conceal the identity of Yoshitsugu’s head by replacing it with his own. The grave of Yoshitsugu is said to have been built by the Todo clan.

Otani Yoshitsugu’s Encampment (Sekigahara Town)

Location:30-1 Oaza Yamanaka, Sekigahara Town

Cautious of Kobayakawa Hideaki’s suspicious movements, Otani Yoshitsugu took up position at the mountain overlooking the Tosan-do Road (Nakasen-do Highway) and with a commanding view of Mt. Matsuo from head on. Commanding his troops from a Mikoshi portable carriage due to illness, he was attacked from three sides by Kobayakawa Hideaki, Wakisaka Yasuharu and others, and his battalion was annihilated.

Ishida Mitsunari’s Encampment

Location:4008 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

Ishida Mitsunari took up position at the top of the mountain because of its panoramic view of all Sekigahara and because the Hokkoku Kaido Road could be controlled. The troops of Shima Sakon and others, who had set up camp at the foot of the mountain, put up a good fight, but were gradually pushed back, and the Western Armies were routed one by one due to Kobayakawa Hideaki’s betrayal. Mitsunari fled in the direction of Mt. Ibuki.

Battle Site Memorial (Sekigahara Town)

Location:1202 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

When the Western Army was routed due to the betrayal of Kobayakawa Hideaki, it is said that this land was filled with Eastern Army troops who took the attack to the troops of Ishida and Shimazu. The outcome of this decisive battle was settled in just half a day.

Okayama Signaling Ground / Kuroda Nagamasa and Takenaka Shigekado’s Encampment

Location:732-27 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

This place is on a 164m high hill that commands a panoramic view of Sekigahara and the progress of the battle. Kuroda Nagamasa and Takenaka Shigekado stationed around 5,000 troops here. They lit a beacon to signal the start of the battle.

Hosokawa Tadaoki's Encampment (Sekigahara Town)

Location:811-104 Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

Hosokawa Tadaoki was a samurai general who received favors from the Toyotomi clan, but there was bad blood between him and Mitsunari, so he joined the Eastern Army from the outset. He boldly attacked Ishida’s battalion with Kuroda and Takenaka’s forces.

Tokugawa Ieyasu's Final Encampment(Sekigahara Town)

Location:959-2 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

About 11.00 in the morning, Tokugawa Ieyasu moved his headquarters to this camp, positioned head-on with Mitsunari’s camp on Mt. Sasao, to identify the progress of the battle. According to one theory, Ieyasu threatened Kobayakawa Hideaki at Mt. Matsuo by firing gunshots from here. After the battle, the severed head viewing ceremony was held here.

Tanaka Yoshimasa’s Encampment (Sekigahara Town)

Location:959-2 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

Tanaka Yoshimasa annihilated Ishida’s battalion at the end of the battle with other commanders of the Eastern Army. He was ordered to hunt down Mitsunari, who had fled after the battle. He arrested Mitsunari after finding him hiding in a cave in Mt. Ibuki.
