Okayama Signaling Ground / Kuroda Nagamasa and Takenaka Shigekado’s Encampment (Sekigahara Town)

Location:732-27 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

This place is on a 164m high hill that commands a panoramic view of Sekigahara and the progress of the battle. Kuroda Nagamasa and Takenaka Shigekado stationed around 5,000 troops here. They lit a beacon to signal the start of the battle.

Battle Site Memorial (Sekigahara Town)

Location:1202 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

When the Western Army was routed due to the betrayal of Kobayakawa Hideaki, it is said that this land was filled with Eastern Army troops who took the attack to the troops of Ishida and Shimazu. The outcome of this decisive battle was settled in just half a day.

Shima Sakon’s Encampment (Sekigahara Town)

Location:4008 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

On the day before the Battle of Sekigahara, Shima Sakon led 500 men to victory at the Battle of Kuisegawa (Ogaki City). With the morale of the Western Army high, Sakon took up his position at the foot of Mt. Sasao. While he suppressed the ferocious attack of the Eastern Army, he was wounded by gunfire from Kuroda’s battalion and then retreated from the front.

Ishida Mitsunari’s Encampment

Location:4008 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

Ishida Mitsunari took up position at the top of the mountain because of its panoramic view of all Sekigahara and because the Hokkoku Kaido Road could be controlled. The troops of Shima Sakon and others, who had set up camp at the foot of the mountain, put up a good fight, but were gradually pushed back, and the Western Armies were routed one by one due to Kobayakawa Hideaki’s betrayal. Mitsunari fled in the direction of Mt. Ibuki.

Konishi Yukinaga’s Encampment (Sekigahara Town)

Location:2368-1 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

At the Battle of Sekigahara, Yukinaga took up position at Mt. Kitatenma from where he lit a beacon to signal the start of fighting to his allies. After the Western Army troops were routed, Konishi’s battalion took flight and Yukinaga fled towards Ibigawa Town. He then surrendered himself and was executed at Kyoto along with Ishida Mitsunari.

Battle Commencement Memorial (Sekigahara Town)

Location:2368-1 Oaza Sekigahara, Sekigahara Town

The Western Army used a v-shaped formation consisting of Ishida Mitsunari at Mt. Sasao and Kobayakawa Hideaki at Mt. Matsuo, while the Eastern Army employed a fish formation with Fukushima Masanori at the vanguard in the center of the Sekigahara Basin. The decisive battle got underway when Matsudaira Tadayoshi and Ii Naomasa opened fire on Ukita’s battalion.
