On the day following the battle, the victor Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered Takenaka Shigekado to restore the shrines damaged by the fighting, and to bury the severed heads of the dead left on the battlefields. Shigekado buried the dead and built tombs for the war dead in two places – one each in the east and west. Bato Kannon (the horse-headed Kannon) and Senju Kannon (the thousand-armed Kannon) are enshrined at the Kannon-dedicated temple built in the Western Head Mount area in 1793.

Todo and Kyogoku’s forces crossed swords with the troops commanded by Otani Yoshitsugu once the battle got underway. With the Kobayakawa Hideaki defection, Wakisaka Yasuharu, who had been let in on the ruse by Todo, also changed sides, and they led the Eastern Army to victory.

Cautious of Kobayakawa Hideaki’s suspicious movements, Otani Yoshitsugu took up position at the mountain overlooking the Tosan-do Road (Nakasen-do Highway) and with a commanding view of Mt. Matsuo from head on. Commanding his troops from a Mikoshi portable carriage due to illness, he was attacked from three sides by Kobayakawa Hideaki, Wakisaka Yasuharu and others, and his battalion was annihilated.

Facing defeat, Otani Yoshitsugu committed seppuku and ordered his retainer, Yuasa Gosuke, to take his head and hide it from the Eastern troops. Straight after hiding his severed head, Gosuke was discovered by the nephew of Todo Takatora. It is said that he implored his captor to conceal the identity of Yoshitsugu’s head by replacing it with his own. The grave of Yoshitsugu is said to have been built by the Todo clan.

The lord of Tarui Castle (Tarui Town), Hiratsuka Tamehiro, was a follower of his ally, Otani Yoshitsugu. He was entrusted to command the front line in place of Yoshitsugu.

Ukita Hideie was the assistant commanding officer of the Western Army, but he took up the rear guard when the time came for the army to march onto Sekigahara. He was caught up by Fukushima’s troops, who were at the head of the Eastern Army during the midnight march. This is said to have led to skirmishes. He took 17,000 men to fight in the main battle, the largest force of the Western Army.

Ishida Mitsunari took up position at the top of the mountain because of its panoramic view of all Sekigahara and because the Hokkoku Kaido Road could be controlled. The troops of Shima Sakon and others, who had set up camp at the foot of the mountain, put up a good fight, but were gradually pushed back, and the Western Armies were routed one by one due to Kobayakawa Hideaki’s betrayal. Mitsunari fled in the direction of Mt. Ibuki.
